Google AI Overviews Nearly Double for Commercial Searches

AI answers used to appear for simple questions. Now they sit above “best,” “reviews,” “price,” and “vs” searches, the very searches that bring in paying customers. Here is what changed, and what to do about it.

AI Overview Summary

Google AI Overviews are the AI-written answer boxes at the top of search results. A Semrush study of 400 U.S. commercial keywords found that they appeared on 88% of them in August 2026, compared with about 46% in September 2025. The study covered buying searches such as “best,” “reviews,” “price,” “alternatives,” and “brand vs brand.” When popular keywords were counted more heavily, the figure rose to 97%. The study did not measure clicks or sales, so the effect on traffic is still unproven. The sensible response is to track which of your keywords show an AI Overview, check which websites it quotes, and keep your comparison and pricing pages accurate.

What Did the Study Find?

Semrush tracked 400 keywords for a full year. These were all “buying” searches in banking, software, and ecommerce. The data runs from September 2025 to August 2026 and comes exclusively from U.S. desktop searches, which is an important limitation to remember.

In September 2025, an AI Overview appeared on about 46 out of every 100 of these keywords, and by August 2026 it appeared on 88 out of 100, which is almost double in a single year.

The researchers also examined five different categories of buying searches, namely “alternatives,” “best X for Y,” “price or cost,” “reviews,” and “brand vs brand,” and all five categories now display an AI Overview more than 80% of the time.

Why Commercial Searches Matter So Much

Think about how a customer shops: first they learn what a product is, then they compare a few options, and finally they check reviews and prices before making a decision.

Early AI Overviews mostly helped with the first step, answering basic questions like “what is a credit card?”, so businesses did not worry much about them, because those searchers were not ready to buy yet.

The new data shows a significant transformation, because AI Overviews are now appearing during the final stages of decision-making, when a person is close to spending money.

This is a serious shift for any business that depends on search, because a page that ranks well for a “best” or “reviews” keyword used to win the click, and the customer, in one step, but now Google writes a short summary above the page, pulls details from several websites and videos, and gives the searcher enough information to make a choice without ever opening your site, which means that your ranking still matters, but it no longer tells the whole story about whether people will find you, trust you, and contact you.

The study does not say that clicks have dropped, because it only counted how often the AI answer appears; even so, an answer box that sits above your listing is something every business should plan for.

Which Searches Changed the Most

Not every type of search moved at the same speed. “Reviews” searches experienced the largest increase, moving from an AI Overview about 30% of the time a year ago to nearly 90% today.

“Best X for Y” searches, such as “best smartwatch for women,” now have the highest coverage at over 96%.

The table below shows the gap between a year ago and today. Numbers marked “about” are rounded from the study’s reported figures.

Type of search Example A year ago Now Jump
Reviews “chase checking account review” About 30% About 90% +59 points
Best X for Y “best smartwatch for women” About 43% 96% +53 points
Alternatives “crowdstrike alternatives” About 48% 82% +34 points
Brand vs brand “hubspot vs salesforce” About 63% About 87% +23 points

Industries are also converging toward similar levels of coverage. Ecommerce experienced the biggest rise, from about 33% to 85%, and by August 2026 banking, software, and ecommerce had all settled between 85% and 91%.

There is one more important number to understand: when the study counted popular keywords more heavily, overall coverage climbed to 97%, and the 12% of keywords without an AI Overview accounted for less than 3% of the total search demand in the sample.

A Caution Before You React

This was a fixed sample, not the whole internet. The 400 keywords were chosen by the researchers, so the numbers describe that group and not every commercial search. The study also did not measure clicks or conversions, which means it proves that AI answers are spreading, but not yet how much traffic they take.

What This Means for Your Business

If you run a business in Mumbai or anywhere else in India, you may reasonably wonder whether this applies to you, and the honest answer is that nobody can be certain yet, since the study examined only U.S. desktop searches, so results in India, on mobile phones, and in other industries may be different.

However, the direction is clear, because Google keeps adding AI answers to more kinds of searches, and buying searches are now firmly included in that expansion.

  • Your comparison pages still matter. They help shape what the AI Overview says, even when fewer people click.
  • Other websites speak for you. AI Overviews pull from review sites, forums, YouTube videos, and competitor pages, not just your own site.
  • Old details can hurt you. If your pricing page is outdated, the AI answer may repeat the wrong information.

The study gave one useful example. For “mailchimp vs klaviyo,” the AI Overview quoted Klaviyo’s own guide for one half of the answer. It quoted a third-party site, Zapier, for the other half. A YouTube video also appeared as a source.

Therefore, the answer people see about your brand can be assembled from many different places at once.

How to Stay Visible When AI Answers First

You cannot switch off AI Overviews, but you can improve the chances that they mention your business and describe it accurately.

1. Track AI answers, not just rankings

Select your top 20 buying keywords, search each one, and record whether an AI Overview appears, which websites it quotes, and whether your brand is mentioned at all.

2. Find out who is being quoted

Examine the sources inside each AI answer, because you will probably find review platforms, listicles, YouTube channels, and community discussions, and these are the places where your brand needs to be present and described accurately.

3. Keep comparison and pricing pages fresh

Update them regularly, and use clear headings and direct answers so that Google can lift clean passages. If you want a simple way to see which pages are losing visibility, our guide on using Google Search Console for SEO growth is a good place to start. Also make sure the basics are sound, since a page that Google cannot crawl cleanly will not be quoted, as explained in our post on how to prioritize technical SEO for real results.

4. Get reviewed where AI looks

Identify the review websites that appear as sources for your keywords, and where their guidelines allow it, invite satisfied customers to leave an honest review after a purchase.

5. Work with trusted video creators

YouTube reviews appeared as sources in the study’s example, so it is worthwhile to contact channels that your customers already trust and ask them for an honest review of your product or service.

A 30-Minute Self-Check

Open Google in a private window and check each main buying keyword against this table.

What you see What it likely means What to do first
AI Overview appears and quotes you Your content is trusted Keep the page accurate and fresh
AI Overview appears but quotes others Rivals or review sites are shaping the answer Improve the page and earn reviews on cited sites
AI Overview names you with wrong details Old information is live somewhere Fix your pages and the third-party listings
No AI Overview yet You still have a window Strengthen the page before one appears

As a simple example, imagine you spend ?1,00,000 a month on ads for a “best” keyword. If an AI answer now sits above the page that your ads send people to, it is worth checking whether the ad and the page still match what searchers have just read.

Mistakes That Look Like Strategy

Many businesses react to AI Overviews in ways that feel intelligent but actually waste money, so watch out for the following common errors:

  • Assuming a number one ranking still brings the same traffic as last year.
  • Panicking and deleting comparison or pricing pages that still influence the AI answer.
  • Judging success only by clicks, and ignoring whether your brand is mentioned in the AI answer.
  • Letting old prices, plans, or features stay live, so the AI repeats outdated facts.
  • Treating one U.S. study as proof for your market, without checking your own keywords first.
